FBI Fishes Phishers

FBI finally does something about phishing:
A large group of suspected internet fraudsters has been arrested following an investigation by the FBI.

Seventeen individuals have been arrested, four in the US and the rest in Poland, after being chased by over 20 different FBI offices.

The group is accused of carrying out a phishing attack against a major financial institution in the three months from August 2004, it is claimed.

Police arrest suspected phishing gang Richard Thurston, ZDNet UK, 03 Nov 2006

Good on the FBI!

Meanwhile, I wonder why this story is mostly getting play in countries other than the U.S. (mostly U.K. and Croatia, according to google news), considering that it mostly happened in the U.S.

Ah, Brian Krebs got a story published in wapo and published more details on his blog.

But that’s it? I know it’s election season and all, but I’m pretty sure the targets of phishing care about it more than the news media seem to be reflecting.

PS: Thanks to Bill for the heads-up.

I am totally amazed at the amount of purposely ignorant people out there who still open their bulk mail and emails from people or groups they are NOT familiar with. In my email, If it’s not from someone I KNOW, I’m not stupid enough to even open it, but delete it without giving the sender even the thought that I would be that stupid… and my bulk mail… well… I don’t even open that folder.. but have it dumped. With all those &*^% out there stealing identities, etc, you’d think folks would make themselves alert and aware… on purpose!
    Just my thoughts.

The new users, the ill, the elderly, the naive, the isolated, the well-meaning: these are who the cammers prey upon. It only takes a tiny percentage of Internet users to add up to plenty for the scammers. There’s nothing unique to the Internet about this, either. Paper mail You May Have Won! letters hook people every day. Unscrupulous televangelists have been crying through their mascara for many years. People lose a lot at casinos, and the surrounding territory loses more in social services payouts. People pour good money into state lotteries, which are among the surest ways to lose money around.
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn’t true.
Why would strangers give you money, anyway?
If you’ve been victimized, and you have evidence, consider calling the FBI. If it’s big enough, or related to enough other cases, they may do something.
